MIDLOTHIAN, VA: The Richmond Revolution hosted their home opener last night, the first of seven games to be played outdoors on the SportsQuest East Campus. Weather predictions of possible rain proved to be incorrect, as the game was played under great, albeit windy, conditions. An opening night crowd of 1,862 saw the Revolution give up the go ahead touchdown pass from Lehigh Valley QB AJ Roque with 1.2 seconds to make the final score 41-38 in favor of Lehigh Valley, the team's first win in their short history.
Both teams came into the game having lost their first game of the season last week, Lehigh Valley falling to Reading 33-26 and Richmond losing to Bloomington 44-6. This game, the first of four between the teams, saw the Revolution holding a slim one point lead at halftime, 25-24, before falling behind in the fourth quarter. A late touchdown pass from Revolution QB Dennis Brown (Norfolk State) to WR Josh Crawford (Winston Salem State)put the Revolution ahead 38-34 with less than five minutes remaining in the game. The touchdown pass was Brown's fourth of the game, to go along with two rushing touchdowns in his IFL Debut.
The Revolution had a few new faces on the team for the game that didn't make the trip to Bloomington last week. QB Dennis Brown had been on the training camp roster but did not travel with the team. The Revolution also brought in a new center, Joe Johnson (Virginia Union), a new linebacker, Hurley Hemphill (Virginia Union) and actived WR/FB Shawn Hibbard from the league's exempt list. Hibbard is one of the top snipers for the US Army, and a Bronze Star recipient for his work over in Afghanistan. Hibbard was playing in his first professional football game. Throughout the season, he will be making various appearances in games, in between frequent flights abroad to serve in the Middle East.
The SportsQuest campus was host to multiple events throughout the day, as there was a small soccer tournament between VCU, The University of Maryland, The University of Maryland Baltimore and the University of Virginia. The campus will also be playing host to the Jefferson Cup in the upcoming weeks, as well as the James Madison University Spring Game, which will take place on April 16.
The Revolution will travel to Lehigh Valley in two weeks, for their first ever home game, March 19, and then return home on March 26 to play host to the La Crosse Spartans. The game has a special theme of "Guns and Hoses" night, which will feature special activities and ticket discounts for members of the local police and fire departments. Loveland Distributing will be one of the special sponsors for the night.
