Amarillo, TX 3/2/11 - The Canyon girl's basketball team has made the state tournament in Austin and are a perfect 36-0 on the season, but in their way is Amarillo Venom's Defensive Coordinator Sammy Walker's twin sister Tammy Walker-Brown.
Tammy Walker-Brown is the head coach of the Ozen Lady Panthers who the Canyon Lady Eagles will play in the State Semifinals this weekend. The Ozen Lady Panthers are 33-4 on the season and are coming off of a 58-57 win against Huntsville.
"She is a winner and just knows how to win," said Venom Defensive Coordinator Sammy Walker. "I know I am coaching close to Canyon, but that's my twin sister and I hope they are able to win."
Coach Walker may hope the Ozen Lady Panthers are able to win, but it's going to be a difficult task. The Lady Panthers are making their first appearance in the state tournament while the Canyon Lady Eagles are making the trip for the 23rd time in school history.
The Lady Eagles are 36-0 on the season and beat everybody on their regular season schedule by at least eleven points. However, they have shown signs of vulnerability their last two games. They beat Mansfield Summit by just three points 29-26 and had to make a dramatic come back against district rival Plainview to force overtime where they eventually won 42-40. They had previously beaten Plainview twice by a combined 31 points.
Coach Sammy Walker will have time to keep up with basketball this weekend as the Amarillo Venom are on one of their two bye weeks this season. After their week off, the Venom will travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Bricktown Brawlers March 13th. The Venom's first regular season home game is March 18th as they host the Wyoming Calvary. Season tickets can still be purchased through the Amarillo Venom offices, located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo, by calling 806-350-7277, stopping by any United Supermarket location, or by going to www.panhandletickets.com .
