Amarillo, TX 2/28/11 - The Amarillo Venom are looking forward to a bye week after their regular season opener against the Colorado Ice.
"The bye week will give us an opportunity to work on some things," said Rodney Blackshear, Head Coach of the Amarillo Venom. "Timing is essential in this league and our guys' timing has been a little off."
Coach Blackshear said the bye week will give his quarterback X'Zavier Bloodsaw, who was named the starter a week ago, a chance to get on the same page with his receivers.
"He is a rookie to the indoor game and it takes some time to get adjusted," said Coach Blackshear. "Having two weeks to prepare for our next opponent will allow him to work on timing with our receivers and to get a better feel for our offense."
While the Venom's offense will work on timing over the bye week, the Venom's return team will try to sustain what they've been able to do already. The Venom's special teams excelled for the second week in a row as they returned two kickoffs for touchdowns against the Colorado Ice. Cashmin Thomas, who had two kick returns for touchdowns in last week's exhibition game against Allen, had a 48-yard touchdown return and Donta Bright had a 36-yard return for a touchdown.
"Our return game was impressive once again," said Coach Blackshear. "Coach [Jarrett] Hicks has done a great job with those guys and they are an exciting unit to watch."
The Amarillo Venom have a bye week before heading to Oklahoma City to take on the Bricktown Brawlers March 13th. The Venom's first regular season home game is March 18th as they host the Wyoming Calvary. Tickets can be purchased through the Amarillo Venom offices, located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo, by calling 806-350-7277, stopping by any United Supermarket location, or by going to www.panhandletickets.com .
