The training camp days are numbered for the Tri-Cities Fever. The Fever begins its second season in the Indoor Football League on Saturday at home against the expansion Arizona Adrenaline at 7:05 p.m.
Leading up to that point, coach Adam Shackleford and his team has lot of work to do, and some tough decisions to make.
Shackleford pared his roster to 30 by the end of the day Thursday.
"We are making some tough moves because we have a lot of good football players out here," said Shackleford, who led the Fever to playoffs last season for the first time since the 2007 season.
Another tough decision for Shackleford to make is who will be starting at quarterback. Houston Lillard, who led the Fever to the playoffs last season, and rookie Antwon Young have both been impressive at practice and in the preseason win last Thursday against Wenatchee.
"They can both play the position," Shackleford said. "I'll name a starter, but right now I'm not quite ready to make that decision. That is definitely one of the strengths of our team."
Maybe the toughest decision Shackleford will have to make this week is how to prepare for an Arizona team that he knows very little about.
The Adrenaline have a roster filled with junior college players and have not fielded a team since 2008. However, in its only season in the American Indoor Football Association, Arizona posted an 11-3 record and made the playoffs.
"Usually you can call someone to get some information," Shackleford said about getting a scouting report. "You usually can't keep a secret in the profession. But we know nothing about them, and I think they will know a whole lot more about us."
In regards to knowing very little about the organization, Shackleford will not look past this team.
"I know they are the best team we are going to see this week and that we are preparing for it like it's a championship game," he said.
Saturday night's game is Blackout Hunger Night where you can receive $1 off a walk-up ticket by bringing a non-perishable food item to the door. The food will be donated to Second Harvest. The first 1,000 fans will also receive a Blackout Hunger Night T-Shirt.
