Huntington Hammer Gets Defensive in Victory Against the Canton Cougars
HUNTINGTON, WVa. - The Huntington Hammer recorded five defensive scores, including all three fourth-quarter touchdowns, as they posted the 41-26 victory over the Canton Cougars in Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) action at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena Sunday. r ans.gif(Game Stats ) It marked the first UIFL game for both teams in the league's inaugural season.
Adrian Portis had a fumble return 10 yards for a touchdown and 15-yard interception return for a score. He added a team-high seven tackles with a half sack. Kevin Allen Jr. took back interceptions of 20 and 50 yards, respectively, while Rodney Fritz' 15-yard fumble return to capped the scoring.
The defense enabled the Hammer to post the victory despite recording a mere 63 yards of total offense.
Canton quarterback Brian Kover accounted for two of the Cougars' three touchdowns, a one-yard run and 17-yard pass, while Seth Burkholder recorded two field goals.
Canton (0-1) will host Northern Kentucky in the River Monsters' first UIFL contest, while Huntington (1-0) will travel to Eastern Kentucky (0-1).
The Ultimate Indoor Football League is a professional indoor football league with six teams in five states. The teams are places in Saginaw, Mich. (Saginaw Sting), Canton, Ohio (Canton Cougars), Johnstown, Pa. (Johnstown Generals), Highland Heights, Ky. (Northern Kentucky River Monsters), Pikeville, Ky. (Eastern Kentucky Drillers) and Huntington, WVa. (Huntington Hammer).
