Amarillo, TX 2/14/11 - After just three days of training camp the Amarillo Venom are set to make their first round of cuts.
Nearly 45 players showed up to the Amarillo Venom training camp with hopes of making the 2011 roster, but today five of those players will be let go.
"You never like to let anyone go," said Joe Morgado, General Manager of the Amarillo Venom, "but the truth is this is a business and there are 45 guys competing for 25 roster spots, so you are going to make cuts."
Rodney Blackshear, Head Coach of the Amarillo Venom and former Texas Tech Wide Receiver, said he's not doing the player he is cutting or his team any favors if he keep guys around that he knows will not make the team.
"Some of these guys you know aren't going to make the final roster," said Coach Blackshear. "If you keep them around they are taking quality reps away from guys that have a chance and need the extra work. By letting guys go this early, they still have a chance of making it with another team. They may not be a good fit for us, but that doesn't mean they're not a good fit for someone else."
Even with the first round of roster cuts, Coach Blackshear and the Venom front office have tough decisions ahead to trim the roster to 25 players.
The Venom's first action is their February 20th exhibition game against the Allen Wranglers. Fans with a V.I.P pass will have the opportunity to meet two former Dallas Cowboys, Everson Walls and Drew Pearson. For more information on how to obtain your V.I.P. pass call the Venom offices at (806) 350-7277.
Tickets for the February 20th exhibition game are on sale through the Amarillo Venom front office, located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo, and single game tickets for the regular season go on sale February 18th. Tickets can also be purchased at www.panhandletickets.com or any United Supermarket location.
