The Trenton Steel, in announcing the signing of former University of Pittsburgh star O'Derick Turner, added a bundle of offensive talent.
Turner, the son of former NFL receiver Odessa Turner, who runs a 4.48 40-yard dash, caught 122 passes for 1,681 yards and 15 touchdowns during his Panthers career, is 6-foot-3, 215 pounds and has a vertical leap of 37 inches, a perfect fit for the Indoor Football game.
His statistics would have been even more impressive had Pitt not passed just 41 percent of the time during his senior season of 2009. Despite being given NFL consideration by the New England, New York Giants and Washington Redskins, a pre-draft hamstring injury limited his effectiveness in pre-draft drills and he did not play in 2010.
Turner, after catching 44 passes for 660 yards and eight touchdowns during his freshman season in 2006, was named to The Sporting News Big East All-Freshman Team and a Rivals Freshman All-America selection. He played that season with present Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Tyler Palko.
He is also credited with being one of the top blocking wide receivers to come out of the Big East.
The Steel open their inaugural season in the Southern Indoor Football League March 19 at the Richmond Raiders, with their home-opener at 7:05 p.m. March 26 at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.
Season tickets, which start as low as $60, are available. Information can be obtained by calling the Steel offices at 609-656-3300 or on the team's Web site at www.trentonsteel.com. Single-game tickets are available by phone, at the Sun National Bank Center ticket windows, or on-line at www.comcastttix.com
