Fans of Barber-Scotia College's men's basketball team are certainly familiar Chuck Thompson. He was a starter at point guard for the Mighty Sabers, located in Concord, N.C., in the shadow of Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Since his college graduation, however, Thompson has found success as a professional indoor football player and a reputation as one of the better defensive backs in the game.
So it came as no surprise, when Thompson became available, the Steel, the Trenton club signed the 5-foot-8, 175-pound, 28-year-old specialist. He is a native of Bowie, Md.
"After I got done with college, my friends got me into this type of football, and I'm making a career of it,'' said Thompson. "I enjoy playing in the defensive backfield.
"My goal is to be a lock-down defensive back on every play. That's my game, and I'm confident I can certainly help the Steel in that area. I'm glad to get the chance.''
Offensively, Thompson plays at wide receiver. Given the ebb and flow of the indoor game, he could be valuable on the offensive side of the ball as well.
Thompson began his professional career in 2005 with the Peoria (Ill.) Rough Riders of the United Indoor Football League (UIFL). In his season with the Rough Riders, Thompson recorded eight touchdowns at wide receiver.
He also spent time in the AIFA with the Erie (Pa.) Freeze, as well as three seasons in the Continental Indoor Football League with the Steubenville (Ohio) Stampede, Summit County (Ohio) Rumble, and New Jersey Revolution.
With the Revolution in 2007, Thompson played his first six games without allowing a reception en route to six interceptions on the season.
The Steel open their inaugural SIFL season March 19 at the Richmond (Va.) Raiders, then debut at home with the Erie Express at 7:05 p.m. March 26 at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. Season tickets, starting at $60, can be ordered by calling 609-656-3300. Single-game tickets are available by phone, at the Sun National Bank Center box office and online at www.comcasttix.com
