HIGHLAND HEIGHTS - The Northern Kentucky River Monsters didn't have to look too far to find their new kicker.
Former Thomas More kicker Dustin Zink earned a spot on the team's training camp roster after an impressive performance at Sunday's (January 16). Zink was a four-year starter for the Saints, a team that won three straight Presidents' Athletic Conference championships.
He connected on 49-of-51 on extra points and 10-of-15 on field goals en route to earning first team All-PAC honors. Zink was 138-of-147 (93.8 percent) on extra points and 18-of-25 (72 percent) on field goals in his four-year collegiate career.
Zink wasn't the only person impressive enough to earn the opportunity to make the team out of training camp.
One of the most talked about athletes at the tryout was receiver Willie Idlette III, a former star at Wake Forest. Idlette was a four-year letterwinner with the Demon Deacons, and was named Scripps/FWAA Freshman All-America and All-ACC Freshman by the Sporting News at the all-purpose position. He culminated his collegiate career with a six reception, 91 yard performance against Louisville in the FedEx Orange Bowl.
Cornerback Brandon Martin turned heads with his physical performance in the backfield, and was fluid in his cover skills. Martin, a Finneytown High School grad, also plays outdoor with the Kings Comets. Another member of the Comets will have a chance to make see if their skills translates to the indoor game as defensive back Chris Stanford earned a contract.
Defensive lineman Jeff Jeffries was the final person to earn a spot in training camp.
The River Monsters open training camp at Midwest Hoops on February 1 with eyes toward their February 28th opener on the road against the Canton Cougars.
The Northern Kentucky River Monsters are inaugural members of the Ultimate Indoor Football League. The River Monsters, a professional indoor/arena football team, play their home football games at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. Their first home game will be March 18, 2011.
