HARRISBURG, PA (January 24, 2011) - Defensive Back Markee Hamlin, who totaled over 225 tackles as a perennial All-Conference performer at South Carolina State, has been signed by the Harrisburg Stampede of the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL).
"Markee is the type of DB we look for; a big strong kid with outstanding speed and quickness. He comes from a very good football program at South Carolina State and we are excited to see what Markee can bring to our defense," commented Stampede General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Nowotarski.
As a two-way standout at Lamar (South Carolina) High School, Hamlin helped lead the Silver Foxes to three straight state football championships. He also was named to the All-State Team in football twice and played in the North-South All-Star Game.
His success was not limited to the football field as he also lettered in baseball, basketball, and track and field and was named All-State in basketball as a senior.
As a freshman in 2006 at South Carolina State Hamlin quickly became a fixture on defense with 41 tackles (22 solo and 19 assisted), two interceptions, two passes broken up, and four passes defended.
In 2007 his numbers continued to climb as he tallied 63 tackles (39 solo/24 assisted), five interceptions, and five passes defended. Following the season he was named Second Team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Before the 2008 season he was named to the Pre-Season All-MEAC First Team and didn't disappoint as he had a career high 70 tackles, including 42 solo stops and had four passes defended and one fumble recovery.
The 10-3 Bulldogs won the MEAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA playoffs, but fell to Appalachian State in the first round. Hamlin was again recognized for his efforts and was named First Team All-MEAC at defensive back.
In 2009 he was named Pre-Season First Team All-MEAC and again piled up impressive numbers as he had 52 total tackles, three interceptions, six passes defended and one fumble recovery.
The Bulldogs repeated as MEAC champions, finished 10-2, and advanced to the NCAA playoffs falling 20-13 to Appalachian State in the opening round.
In his four seasons at South Carolina State Hamlin played in 45 games, totaled 226 tackles, including 138 solo takedowns, had 11 interceptions, eight passes broken up, and 19 passes defended.
