RAYS STINGLESS AGAINST LIONS Date: 4/27/2008 12:44:04 AM
COLUMBUS, GA (April 26, 2008) – In the first of 5 straight divisional games, the Columbus Lions (5-2) of the American Indoor Football Association defeated the Florida Stingrays (0-6) 63-25 at the Lee County Civic Center Saturday night in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Led by wide receiver Silas Daniels 8 catches for 151 yards, and 5 touchdown night, the Lions passing attack finished the night with 6 passing TD’s and over 250 yards passing. After only leading 11-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Lions scored 36 points in the second quarter to take a 47-3 halftime lead.
In an intriguing match-up of two brothers, younger brother Keon Newson led the Columbus defense with 3 interceptions returning one for a touchdown. Keon now leads the club with 6 interceptions on the season. His brother, Kendall Newson finished with only 2 catches and one touchdown for the Stingrays.
Overall the Lions defense took the sting out of the Rays offense collecting 5 turnovers and 3 sacks. Rays quarterbacks could only connect on 12 of 37 passes. Lion’s kicker Hunter Smith added 2 more rouge kicks and was 2 for 3 in field goal attempts.
Next week the Lions will return to the Columbus Civic Center on May 3rd to take on the Augusta Colts (5-2). The Lions will be presenting “Faith and Family Night” with Christian rock band New Method conducting a free pre-game concert.
