Path to Harrisburg Stampede Varied for Latest Signings
HARRISBURG, PA (January 14, 2011) - The path players takes to the Stampede are as varied as the heights and weights of the men on Harrisburg's roster.
Today's Stampede signings include a player whose travels took him from one of the nation's storied football programs to Harrisburg, another who had to rebound from a one year college career to make a name for himself in the semi-pro ranks, and a third who is hoping to make a return to pro football after a three year hiatus.
Recent Stampede signee Stephen Tripp took the more traditional route to the pros. After lettering for four seasons at Tampa Bay Tech High School and earning All-Conference and All-County honors as a senior, Tripp earned a scholarship to the United States Naval Academy.
After one year at the Academy, Tripp transferred to Grambling State University, where he saw action in all four seasons (2007-2010) at linebacker and on special teams. Now the 5'11", 210 pound LB hopes to make a name for himself in professional football.
"Stephen is one of these kids that you want to give a shot. He's always being told you can't do that and he is the type of kid that works even harder to do what he was told he couldn't do. I look forward to Stephen getting into camp and working for a spot, "commented Stampede General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Nowotarski.
Another rookie hoping to make a name for himself with the Stampede is 6'4", 205 pound wide-out Abe Taylor.
A product of East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio, after just one season for Lake Erie College in Ohio Taylor has established himself as an all-star in semi-pro football circles.
Nowotarski noted Taylor is "Another big kid in our receiver group. At 6'4" he is multi talented and multi positional; we are looking for great things from Abe."
The Stampede also announced the signing of Irving Hyppolite who is looking for a return to the pros.
Out of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, New York the 6'1", 293 pound defensive lineman went right from high school to the pros playing for the New Jersey Revolution of the Continental Indoor Football League in 2008. He was rediscovered by the Stampede this off-season.
Nowotarski recalled, "We found Irving at the Baltimore Combine that Mike Trott organized and ran. Irving tested well and excelled in the individual drills. We look forward to Irving getting into training camp and seeing what he can do with his shot."
