Two Prospects Boost Harrisburg Stampede Receiving Corps
HARRISBURG, PA (January 12, 2011) - The Harrisburg Stampede added to their depth at wide receiver by signing two top prospects, Darren Hudak a 6'5", 220 pound receiver from the University of Northern Iowa and Deondrae Holt, a 5'11", 200 pound wide-out from Kent State.
A two-year letterman at Xavier High School of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in football and track Hudak also served as the Track Team Captain and earned the team's 2004 Pride Award. From 2006 through 2008 he suited up for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers.
After a 7-4 season in 2006, the Panthers then went 12-1 in 2007, with their only loss coming in a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) quarterfinal playoff to the Delaware Blue Hens.
In 2008 they continued their success racking up a 12-3 record losing only to Brigham Young, Southern Illinois, and the eventual national champions, the Richmond Spiders, in the national semi-finals.
Following the 2008 season Hudak was recognized by the Missouri Valley Football Conference on its Academic Honor Roll. In 2009 he signed his first professional football contract with the Sioux City Bandits of the Indoor Football League (IFL).
Stampede General Manager and Head Coach Bernie Nowotarski commented, "Darren is a big target with very good hands and outstanding blocking skills. We have some big young kids at the wide out spot and I am looking for some big things out of all of them. Darren is also a family man and loves working with kids. Those are the types of players we look for, hard worker on the field and a community minded guy off the field."
After an impressive debut in the pro ranks in 2007, Deondrae Holt is hoping to get back on scouts' radar screen with a shot with the Stampede.
A product of Lexington (Ohio) High School and Kent State, Holt brings one year of professional experience to the Stampede.
In 2007 he suited up for the Summit County Rumble of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL). Holt was identified as a "Player to Watch" in the CIFL's on-line preview publication.
"Deondrae is another kid we got from Gabe [Shychuk] at Star Potential. DH has very good hands, runs crisp routes and has very nice speed along with being a strong kid. He seems like he is going to be a good kid for us, his temperament and personality is exactly the type of kid we like; good sportsman on and off the field," said Nowotarski.
