Three from Second Open Tryout Inked to Steelhawks Camp Roster
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks held their second open tryout on December 6th at the Rauch Center on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University. Nearly 50 individuals attended the three hour workout participating in drills such as the 40 yard dash, short shuttle, one on one's and seven on seven's. From the evaluation, Coach Richard Britt and his staff signed three young men to attend next month's training camps with the possibility of adding more from this tryout in the near future. The signings mark the eleventh, twelve, and thirteenth signings from the Steelhawks two open pre-season tryouts. All three players have substantial indoor football playing experience and are each familiar with the Lehigh Valley. Invited to Camp on February 12th are:
Gene Rich-OL/DL 6'1" 290 lbs Northeastern University/CIFL/IFL
Rich, a powerful and versatile linemen, joins the Steelhawks after a successful four year career at Northeastern University that saw him finish with 146 tackles, 15.5 for a loss, and 8.5 sacks. After college, Rich took his skills to the indoor game, suiting up for the New England Surge and Lehigh Valley Outlawz of the CIFL, and the IFL's Green Bay Blizzard. His size and strength adds to a very deep and talented group of linemen for the Steelhawks.
Joe DeLuise-QB 6'1" 215 lbs East Stroudsburg University/AF2
DeLuise is no stranger to the area having played is college ball at East Stroudsburg University. They signal caller was there from 2002-2007 before signing to play in the Arena Football League 2 for the Albany Conquerers and then the nearby Wilkes-Barre Scranton Pioneers. He suited up for ten games between the franchises, starting in two of them.
Brian Smith-DL/OL 6'2" 272 lbs Community College of Philadelphia/CIFL/AIFA
Smith should be familiar to many indoor football fans in the Lehigh Valley as he suited up for the now defunct Lehigh Valley Outlawz at Defensive End for three seasons before playing one season for the Harrisburg Stampede of the old AIFA. He was among the leaders in sacks each season for the team and the CIFL, as he started every game for the Outlawz during those three seasons.
"There were a lot of talented young men at our most recent tryout, many of whom are still on our radar, and will remain there throughout the season," stated Head Coach Richard Britt. "We are confident that we are bringing in three young men who can help us win some ball games, and create a very competitive camp atmosphere come February 12th."
With 36 players under contract for the 2011 season, the Coaching staff is hard at work finalizing their roster for the start of training camp next month. The Steelhawks are allowed to bring as many as 45 men to training camp in February in anticipation of their February 26th opener at the Reading Express. The league allows each team in the league to begin training camp exactly two weeks before their first game. The Steelhawks Home Opener is scheduled for March 19th at the Stabler Arena on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University against the Richmond Revolution.
