Reno Barons Head Coach Major Harris has added another honor to his collection stemming from his standout career at West Virginia. Harris was named 2010 Legend of The Sun Bowl. The induction, took place on December 30, 2010, at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center during the 2010 Rotary Sun Bowl Team Luncheon.
Harris was honored for his 1987 Sun Bowl performance which saw West Virginia face Thurman Thomas and Oklahoma State. During the final drive the Mountaineers ran the ball every play with Harris gaining 32 yards on four carries, but the Mountaineers would eventually lose the game by a score of 35-33 after Keith Winn was stopped short of the endzone.
Tim Pierce, Reno Barons General Manager, issued the following statement on behalf of the front office and coaching staff, “Coach Harris was the most prolific player in college football during his time at West Virginia.” Pierce went on adding, “We would like to congratulate Coach Harris on this honor which serves as another validation for what he meant to collegiate football.”
The induction of Harris to the Legends of the Sun Bowl made him the 28th member of the group. The other members are: Cornelius Bennett, Tom Brookshier, Terry Donahue, Vince Dooley, Tony Dorsett, John H. Folmer, Tony Franklin, Hayden Fry, Ken Heineman, Priest Holmes, Don James, Charley Johnson, Harrison Kohl, Verne Lundquist, Johnny Majors, Jimmy Rogers, Jr., Gerald J. Rubin, Craig Silver, Bill Stevens, Pat Summerall, Barry Switzer, Grant Teaff, Derrick Thomas, Thurman Thomas, Pat Tillman, Alex Van Pelt and Jesse Whittenton.
