Bethlehem, PA: With a little over a month until the start of IFL training camp the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks continue to add to their already stout group of indoor football veterans. The team announced that they have signed Offensive Lineman Darryl Watson and Defensive back Marcus Sargeant to contracts for the 2011 season. Both athletes played the 2010 season for the Harrisburg Stampede of the now SIFL last season, and have both previously played under Steelhawks Defensive Coordinator Kelly Logan
Watson, a 6'3" Cheyney University Grad, is an absolute force along the Offensive Line. In fourteen games last season for the Stampede, Watson did not allow a single sack, which is a large feat in the indoor style of football. His blocking skills allowed the Stampede to be one of the better passing teams in all of the league last season.
Sargeant comes to the Valley as one of the more prolific defensive backs in the indoor football ranks. After a successful career at Lackawanna College, where he was a Jr. College All-American, Sargeant went on to play for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers of the AF2 and then for the Reading Express (currently of the IFL) for two seasons before going to Harrisburg. Since 2007, he has recorded 29 interceptions and over 120 tackles.
"We brought in Coach Logan because of his knowledge of this game and for his recruiting ability," stated Head Coach Richard Britt. "To get two players of the quality of Darryl and Marcus is a strong indication of how well this staff is put together, and also proves how competitive camp will be in early February. "
In other team news, the Steelhawks are still evaluating talent from their second open tryout held on December 6th at the Rauch Field House on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University. The Coaches expect to sign a few participants from that tryout in the coming weeks. The team is allowed up to 45 individuals for February's camp, and must cut down to 30 before their 2011 opener February 26th at the Reading Express.
Holiday season ticket packages, starting as low as $8 per game, are still available but supplies are limited. With each ticket purchased, excluding General Admission seats, you will receive an official Steelhawks t-shirt. Those interested in our Holiday Packs can call the team's front office at 610-282-3100.
