When James Spikes walked off the field for his last high school football game at Woodward in 1998, he was content with the end of his football career.
After a four-year layoff, he was back on the field. Now, he has crossed the river to continue his professional voyage with the Northern Kentucky River Monsters.
“I love the game of football and I appreciate another opportunity to showcase my talent,” said Spikes. “The River Monsters are a great organization ran by true professionals. They will not only help with football, but want us to be better men. Everything they have told me has come to light. They have shown me a lot of loyalty.”
Upon leaving high school, the 6-4 Spikes went on to be a student at the University of Cincinnati, where he couldn’t escape the urge to don a helmet and lace up the shoulders pad once again.
Luckily for him, the opportunity came in the form of the now defunct Cincinnati Marshals. He played the 2005 and 2006 seasons while the team was in Cincinnati, and led the team in sacks. But, decided against following the team to Dayton. Instead, he stayed in Cincinnati for the 2007 season, playing for the JungleKats. However, they lasted just one season in af2.
Once again, Spikes was a football player without a team. And once again, he was ready to call it a career. Three years later, another opportunity fell at his feet, and this time, he really excelled.
He was named the Continental Indoor Football League’s co-Defensive Player of the Year while playing with the Cincinnati Commandoes. Spikes led the CIFL with 16 sacks, and was second with 20 tackles for loss in helping the Commandoes win the CIFL title.
Now, he has officially crossed the river and ready to assist the River Monsters in bring another professional football championship to the tri-state area.
