Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks announced today that they have signed former University of Rhode Island and Baltimore Mariners Running back Isaiah Grier to add to an already strong core of ball carriers. Grier comes to the Lehigh Valley after most recently leading the Baltimore Mariners to an undefeated season and an AIFA Championship.
Grier, a 6'1, 215 pound back is a dual threat runner who can beat opponents with his pure speed, or lower his shoulder a punish a defender with his power. After transferring from Dean College in Massachusetts to the University of Rhode Island, Grier spent his time on the defensive side of the ball and was a Buck Buchanon Award (I-AA's Top Defender) finalist in a Senior season which saw him register 87 tackles, 12 for a loss, and eight sacks.
He came back to the offensive side of the ball in 2007 with the Reading Express, currently of the IFL, and led the AIFA that year in touchdowns with 20. In 2009, Grier brought his talents to the Baltimore Mariners where for the last two season he has led the league in rushing and touchdowns scored. During the Mariners undefeated season and championships season of 2010 Grier led the entire AIFA in rushing touchdowns (30), total touchdowns (37), rushing yards (565), and points (222).
"We couldn't be more thrilled as an organization to land such a uniquely talented player like Isaiah Grier," stated Head Coach Richard Britt. "He brings leadership, he brings talent, and he brings a Championship mentality that I guarantee this team will have entering 2011. Plain and simple, is that Isaiah has a knack for the endzone, and I envision him being there often while in a Steelhawks uniform."
In other team news, the Steelhawks are still evaluating talent from their second open tryout held on December 6th at the Rauch Field House on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University. The Coaches expect to sign a few participants from that tryout in the coming weeks. The team is allowed up to 45 individuals for February's camp, and must cut down to 30 before their 2011 opener February 26th at the Reading Express.
