Houston Stallions Support Thanksgiving Hunger Effort
The new Houston Stallions SIFL (Southern Indoor Football League) Team will kick off their first 2011 season game on March 19th, at The Berry Center, but they are already making their presence known in Houston and surrounding areas. On Friday, November 19th they were in Target Hunger’s Fifth Ward headquarters, helping distribute 2,000 turkeys made possible by a special grant from the Hess Corporation. Turkeys were distributed to some of our Houston neighbors who need them most.
According to Stallions new Head Coach, Gerald Dockery, “At this time of year especially, it is terrible to think about all of the families, children and elderly people who are having trouble keeping food on the table. It is a privilege to be involved with Target Hunger. They feed almost 10,000 of the people who need it most every single month. We are proud to be on the line with them for this special Thanksgiving effort and look forward to backing this exceptional group in every way we can.”
According to Target Hunger Executive Director, Clara Cooper, “We sincerely thank the Houston Stallions for joining our family of caring. Their efforts on Friday helped us get these turkeys into people’s hands without their having to stand in long lines with their children. Target Hunger takes a holistic approach to ending hunger in Houston’s inner city neighborhoods, and a part of that is giving our recipients a dignified process. Our programs include nutrition classes, education and literacy programs, GED/ESL classes, self-esteem and youth development programs.
“We are one of Houston’s largest organizations that actually puts food on the table for these families. We distribute over 3.6 million pounds of food each year and we couldn’t do that without the help of our friends in the Houston business community and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. We look forward to working with the Houston Stallions players and staff. We hope they will bring some of their star power to our events to inspire our neighborhood children.”
According to Dockery, “The Houston Stallions organization is one of the first successful minority-owned teams in a city this size. Houston is a football town, and indoor football takes the excitement to a new level. This is professional football – up close and personal – and we are starting by getting involved with our new hometown right now. We are looking forward to this partnership with Target Hunger, and ready to get to work to make a positive impact on the lives of our new neighbors.”
