Harrisburg, PA: Steve Gaunt has accepted GM and Head Coach Bernie Nowotarski's offer to be the Harrisburg Stampede's defensive coordinator for the 2011 season. Gaunt was the defensive coordinator for the past two seasons with the Baltimore Mariners, who completed their 2010 season with an American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) National Championship and a 16-0 record.
This is not the first time these two have worked together. Nowotarski and Gaunt were both members of the then start-up Reading Express, where Nowotarski also won a AIFA National Championship as Head Coach and GM in the 2009 season. Gaunt's innovative and aggressive style have created some of the best defensive teams in the game along with several All-Star players and this year's Defensive Player of the Year, Armar Watson. "Steve and I live about five minutes away from each other and we have been discussing this move for awhile. He is a student of this game. He is a film guy and searches for the little things that give his defenses an edge. I am excited to have a defensive coordinator with the experience and mind-set of Steve. I welcome him and I am sure the fans of Harrisburg will be glad to have him calling defenses for them instead of against them," stated Nowotarski.
The Stampede and the rest of the AIFA have joined forces and merged with the Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL), as part of the merger, the expanded SIFL rules will switch to an Arena Football League style game. "This is just the kind of challenge that will bring out the very best in Steve. He will study that rule book and he will view film until it becomes second nature for him," commented Nowotarski.
