The La Crosse Spartans have added another stellar defensive weapon to their squad for the upcoming 2011 season. The IFL’s seventh-leading tackler, Doug Emery, will be in training camp with the Spartans in February. Emery finished the 2010 season with 99 tackles which was seventh-best in the league despite playing in just 11 games.
The 6’1”, 215 lbs. linebacker/safety played college ball at Ferris State University. Emery played with the West Michigan Thunderhawks last year and will join former teammates Bryan Pray, Courtney Abbott, Emmanuel Spann, Jermaine Pruitt, and Amp Boone who have all signed with La Crosse this off-season. The Grand Rapids, Michigan, native also had two INT’s last year including one interception returned for a touchdown. Emery joins rookie Wes McDermott at the linebacker position as the team’s first two signings at that spot. “Doug is another great player with a lot of ability that we are excited to have on our side,” Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “He brings the experience and knowledge of the indoor game that we need to keep improving our team. We’re really looking forward to these guys pushing each other in training camp.”
