Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks announced today at a press conference from the Meadows Grove Banquet Hall in Hellertown that they have hired their first Head Coach in team history, Richard Britt.
A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Britt will also serve in the role as the team's Director of Football Operations. He brings a vast knowledge of the indoor game, strong recruiting abilities, and a passion for the game of football to the Valley, and is confident that will translate to on-field success right from the start.
During the indoor football off-season Britt serves as the Special Teams Coordinator and Head Coach for the JV for his alma mater Mount Vernon High School in Virginia. His most recent experience in the indoor game came in 2007 as the Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel with the Sioux City Bandits of the then United Indoor Football Association.
Britt will also bring valuable front office experience to the Steelhawks. He received his start in 2001 with the AF2's Roanoke Steam where he served as the Vice President of Football Operations in addition to his duties of Offensive and Defensive Line Coach. After two seasons in Roanoke, Britt accepted the position of Defensive Coordinator for the Bakersfield Blitz of the AF2 in 2003 where his unit was among the Top Four in the league in seven major categories that included sacks, passes defended, and interceptions. His defense finished third in the league in total defense that season.
In 2004 he took his skills to the Tulsa Talon's, also of the AF2, where he served as a Defensive Consultant and Special Team's Coordinator for a unit that was amongst the league leaders in several categories. The next season he was offered an expanded role to join the Bossier/Shreveport Battlewings of the AF2 to serve as the Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Special Teams and Video Coordinator.
"When I saw that the Lehigh Valley was putting an expansion team into the IFL I knew this is where I wanted to be," stated Britt. "What better situation could I ask for then to come to an expansion franchise and help build it from the ground up. I truly believe that the Lehigh Valley is the premier market to bring indoor football into and I promise to give 110% percent to not only put a winner on the field, but to engrain this team into the community. I hope everybody is ready for a fun ride!"
