Madland to Return as Spartans' Defensive Coordinator
La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans will have Mitch Madland back as defensive coordinator for the 2011 season. Madland joined the team for the final four games mid-way through the Spartans' inaugural season in 2010 as the team's defensive coach. The Spartans defense finished eighth in the league in passing yards allowed last season under Madland.
Madland, who is also currently an assistant coach at nearby Winona State University, has three years of indoor football coaching experience prior to his work with the Spartans last season. He held the defensive coordinator position for the La Crosse Night Train and Myrtle Beach Stingrays in the National Indoor Football League. In addition, he was the head football coach at LaCrescent High School for two seasons.
"We were extremely impressed with the way he handled himself last season," Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. "He joined us late and was able to adapt to a system we already had in place and did a great job. We are really looking forward to having his experience on the sidelines."
The Spartans will be hosting their first open tryouts of the season this Sunday, October 10, at the La Crosse Center. Potential participants can register online at www.lacrossespartans.com. Cost of the tryouts are $65.
The Spartans, entering their second season in the Indoor Football League, were named the 2010 IFL Community Relations Franchise of the Year for their efforts in the community this past season. Season tickets are now on sale for the 2011 season for as low as $84 and can be purchased by calling 608-782-4461 or by visiting www.lacrossespartans.com.
