The Continental Indoor Football League is proud to announce the promotion of Dave Stein to the role of Director of Officials starting with the 2011 season. Stein has been an official in the league since the inaugural season in 2006.
"The officiating crew is the third team on the field, knowledge of the rules and officiating mechanics are the most important part of our duties. From a mechanics standpoint if you are in the wrong position you cannot make the correct call. At this level there is no excuse for not knowing the rules and applying correctly," said Stein.
"The league has come a long way in rules development from the first season. Larry has done a good job of fine tuning and clarifying the rules and mechanics, we will continue to clarify and adjust rules based on previous seasons and concerns generated throughout the year. Based on the last season the level of understanding of the current rules we will need to address the kicking game, both on a free kick and scrimmage kick," added Stein.
CIFL commissioner Jeff Spitaleri said, "I am looking forward to working with Dave. He has a passion for officiating and has some great ideas on how we can further improve our officiating across the league."
Some of Stein's background:
-Officiating since the 1990's
-Have attended Great Lakes Collegiate football camp
-2001 Semi-Pro Quarter finals
-2002 Worked semi-finals and finals national football events, midwest tournament
-2005-2009 MHSAA pre distircts or distircts,
-2005 NWFA semi-finals
-2005 Minor League Football Championship in Grand Rapids, Michigan
-2006 NWFA finals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
-2006 Became official in GLIFL (now CIFL)
-2007 CIFL playoffs assignment
-2008 CIFL Championship Game assignment (Kalamazoo, Michigan)
-2009 CIFL playoffs assignment
-2010 CIFL Championship Game assignment (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Officiating improvements for 2011 season
As the 2010 off-season progresses, discussions on off-season improvements have begun, starting with league officiating.
"We feel that we have some quality officiating in the league, but with all things, we must continue to take the steps to improve," said CIFL Commissioner Jeff Spitaleri.
Among the changes for the 2011 season are a new Director of Officials, Dave Stein, a better payment system, deeper training of all officials and accountability for the actions during the game. The majority of changes were prompted following the Miami Valley Silverbacks win at the Wisconsin Wolfpack in Madison where a Silverbacks player advanced a missed field goal when the play should have been ruled dead upon the recovery.
Jeff Spitaleri noted, "There are accountability measures in place, as they have been for five years, for the players, coaches and staff members in regards to their actions on and off the field. We do believe, along with our owners, that while we get great results from our officials each week, we must also introduce measures which will take our officiating to the next level."
Details of the changes will be provided following the off-season owners meetings in October in Canton, Ohio.
