Green Bay, WI - Green Bay Blizzard star Linebacker Maurice Simpkins is one of the newest members of the Green Bay Packers. Simpkins was sign to the Packer Practice Squad on Monday September 6th. Simpkins was brought into training camp on August 10th and saw limited playing time in the Packers first preseason game against the Browns. Simpkins played mainly on Special Teams through the first three weeks of preseason action contributing with several tackles on the Kick Cover team. It was not until the final preseason game in Kansas City that Simpkins saw considerable playing time with the second team defense. Against the Chiefs, Simpkins had a team high eight tackles (seven solo) and one of them for a loss. Simpkins finished preseason play second on the team in tackles with 13 and 12 of which were solo.
Head coach Rik Richards commented that "This is a great opportunity for Maurice, and I am very excited for him. It could not have happened to a better guy." Richards went on to say, "Maurice getting signed by the Packers will help our recruiting tremendously. To have the ability to tell players we have one guy with the team right now is invaluable."
Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on its "practice squad" in addition to the 53-member main roster. Both rookies and veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club's 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games, he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad. Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week, but they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 is $5,200 per week for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000. Additionally, players can be promoted to the active roster of their current team or to that of any other team. They have Free Agent status and can sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team, if they are released from the practice squad.
The Green Bay Blizzard would like to wish Maurice and the Green Bay Packers the best of luck this season!
