La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans are proud to announce their first player signing for the upcoming 2011 season. The second-year franchise has added Ryan Maiuri to its player roster for next season. Maiuri (6'0", 200 lbs) is a graduate of Lakeland College and previously served as the Spartans offensive coordinator in 2010. He will make the transition back to the field for next season and looks to build on his already stellar indoor football playing history.
Maiuri helped lead the River City Rage of the UIF to the conference championship game in 2008. The Rage went undefeated to close out the regular season and went deep into the playoffs after signing Maiuri mid-way through that season. He also spent time with the Steubenville Stampede of the CIFL, where he set the league's single-game record for passing with 267 yards and four touchdowns in 2007. During that campaign, he was named offensive player of the week numerous times and consistently threw for four or more touchdowns on a weekly basis. He also added a six-touchdown performance in 2009 as a member of the Milwaukee Bonecrushers (CIFL) and spent time in the German football league as well.
"We are very happy to have Ryan in uniform with us," Spartans General Manager Chris Kokalis said. "I've known Ryan for a few years and I'm well aware of the difference he makes on the football field as a player. He's been working out with the receivers that have stayed in the area and we are excited to have his leadership under center as we continue to build our franchise."
The Spartans new quarterback is currently the tight ends coach at nearby Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. He, along with Spartans Defensive Coordinator Mitch Madland is on staff for the Warriors which are ranked 24th in the nation in the latest Division II poll.
In order to make room behind center, the Spartans have released Kewan Dewberry from his contract with the team. Dewberry appeared in six games last season, throwing for 332 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. An announcement regarding the Spartans' now-vacant offensive coordinator position is expected in the coming weeks.
The Spartans, entering their second season in the Indoor Football League, were named the 2010 IFL Community Relations Franchise of the Year for their efforts in the community this past season. Season tickets are now on sale for the 2011 season for as low as $84 and can be purchased by calling 608-782-4461 or by visiting www.lacrossespartans.com.
