The Reno Barons, an arena football team, will play their inaugural season in the American Indoor Football Association as part of the league's Western Conference, the team announced Thursday.
The Barons are scheduled to begin play in March 2011 at the Reno Events Center.
The Barons will play at least six home games in the AIFA Western Conference regular season. Opponents include the Wyoming Calvary, Wenatchee Valley Venom, Yakima Valley Warriors and San Jose Wolves. Additional teams could join the conference for the 2011 season.
The AIFA season runs from March to July.
The AIFA was founded in 2006 by Michael Mink and John Morris and focuses on regionalized play.
"It's all about building the right foundation," Tim Pierce, the Barons' Director of Football Operations, said in a news release. "Michael and John began by forming a team to honor family and to give back to the community. They focused the team on helping young men get a second chance in the game of football and it's grown into the AIFA. That's the kind of foundation we want."
The 2010 AIFA was composed of two conferences -- Eastern and Western -- and 13 teams. The Baltimore Mariners won the 2010 championship after an undefeated season.
The Barons also announced Wednesday that player tryouts will be conducted by head coach Major Harris on Sept. 17. Pre-registration is available at renobarons.com.
Ticket prices will start at $15 and will go on sale in September, and most games will take place on Fridays and Saturdays, according to team owner and CEO Cesare "Chez" Jennings.
