readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=236865Although the Reading Express won't be in the American Indoor Football Association championship game today, Reading fans will have several reasons to root for the Baltimore Mariners.
The Mariners today at 4 p.m. will host Wyoming, the team Reading defeated in last year's AIFA championship. Former Express offensive lineman Mark Stout, now with Baltimore, will try to earn his second straight ring.
Five other former Express players and former Express defensive coordinator Steve Gaunt also will try to help the Mariners complete the first perfect season in AIFA history.
Other Mariners who formerly played for the Express include quarterback E.J. Nemeth, running back Isaiah Grier and defensive backs Amar Watson, Desmond Maul and David Smith. Smith played for the Express earlier this season.
Greg Justice, an offensive lineman for the Express during its first two seasons, is the Mariners general manager.
If that's not enough, the Mariners have chosen Berks County's greatest player ever, Lenny Moore, to be their honorary captain for the game.
Moore, a legend at Reading High and arguably the best running back ever to play at Penn State, earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his 12-year career with the Baltimore Colts.
In the last professional football championship game in Baltimore in 1959, Moore opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown reception from Johnny Unitas to help the Colts win their second straight NFL title.
