DALY CITY, Calif---Just when things looked in check, the San Jose Wolves (7-4) received another gut wrenching loss, this time at the hands of the Yakima Valley Warriors (5-6) by the score of 50-49.
After an overtime loss last week in Wenatchee, San Jose had a chance to clinch a playoff birth with a win at home.
A flat first half found the Wolves down 8 at halftime but San Jose came out on fire in the second half, going up by two scores for a majority of the final two quarters.
While defensive stops had been at a premium in past weeks, the Wolves forced a pair of turnovers and slowed the Warrior offense in the second half. But a tipped pass on the final play pulled the Warriors within a point before a 2-point conversion left the 3,000 plus at the Cow Palace silent.
The Warriors jumped out quickly as wide receiver Gabe Hatchett caught three touchdown passes over 20 yards from quarterback Ben Running in the first half. Wilson Afoa returned a Wolves' fumble 33 yards for another Yakima Valley score, giving the Warriors the largest lead of the night at 15 points. San Jose's Omar Jacobs took in a quarterback keeper right before the half
The Wolves roared back in the second half. Jacobs connected on touchdowns to Jayson Boyd and Jerome McGee before Joey Robinson returned a Running pass 29 yards for a touchdown to put San Jose up by 14 heading into the final quarter.
But Hatchett continued to score for Yakima; catching two touchdown passes interrupted only by another Boyd score for the Wolves.
Yakima got a crucial stop on the Wolves' final possession when Steven Ferdinandi missed a field goal that would have sealed the win. Running and the Warriors controlled the clock for the final minutes before Running's pass was tipped by Hatchett and landed in the lap of Mayfield on the final play of regulation. With no time on the clock, Running held onto the ball on the 2-point attempt and successfully extended across the goal line to shock the Wolves.
Running finished the night 22 for 26 passing for 289 yards and 6 touchdowns, throwing just one interception. Hatchett's remarkable night concluded with eight catches, five of which were touchdowns, for 123 yards.
Jacobs evenly distributed the ball between his three receivers finding Boyd six times for 85 yards and three scores, Bennett five times for 77 yards and a touchdown, and McGee four times for 78 yards and a score. Jacobs finished 15 of 26 for 240 yards and 5 touchdown passes.
Receiver Reggie Eubanks came off the field in the first half and did not return.
San Jose will receive a forfeit win next Saturday as the Arctic Predators have rescheduled the home portion of their schedule due to financial restrictions. The loss is the third consecutive for the Wolves who need just one win to clinch a postseason date with the Wyoming Cavalry. The Wolves could also clinch if Yakima or Wenatchee loses.
