The Blizzard continues its home stand this Saturday, in the friendly confines of the Resch Center as they take on the West Michigan ThunderHawks. Last weekend, the Blizzard snapped a three game losing streak by beating the Wichita Wild.
Blizzard Update: The Blizzard defense was very instrumental in stopping the loosing streak with a tipped pass on the Wichita 2 point conversion at the end of regulation to seal the victory for the Blizzard. Maurice Simpkins, Roger Brown and James McClinton did a great job as did the rest of the defense. Simpkins had 7 solo tackles, one assisted tackle, one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss as well as forcing a fumble. With quarterback Jake Phillips out again against the Wild with a concussion he suffered a couple of weeks ago, Coach Roger Farrar brought in Willie Copeland. Copeland spent some time with the Blizzard in 2009 but never suited for a game. Willie spent most of the 2010 season with the Arkansas Diamonds. Willie had just 2 days of practice before being named the starter. Coach Farrar said they spent a several long nights together working on plays. Willie was 12 of 26 for 94 yards and 3 touchdowns (two to Scotty Burnoski and one to Derek Deardorff). He also ran for one touchdown. The hero of the game was kicker Tino Amancio. Tino hit all 4 extra points and made 4 of his 6 field goal attempts, of which, a 39 yarder sealed the Blizzard win.
ThunderHawk Update: With only two games left in the regular season, the West Michigan ThunderHawks (5-7) needed a victory for their potential playoff run, and with a victory over the Bloomington Extreme, keep them in the playoff picture. The Extreme came up big in the contest, winning 34-14. The Bloomington defense kept the passing game of the ThunderHawks in check by totaling 7.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for a loss.
Taking a closer look at the playoff picture, the Blizzard have an 8-4 record while the Extreme has a 7-5 record with two games remaining. Both teams have clinched a playoff spot; all that is left to be determined is who wins the division. If the Blizzard win this weekend and Bloomington losses, the Blizzard clinch the division. If the Blizzard win this week and next, no matter what Bloomington does, Green Bay wins the division. If both teams win, the outcome of next week's games (June 19th) will decide the division.
This Saturday's game is DAV trading card night. Anyone who attends the game will receive a pack of Green Bay Blizzard trading cards sponsored by DAV. The 1.2 million-member Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is a non-profit 501(c) charity dedicated to building better lives for America's disabled veterans and their families. The DAV was founded in 1920 by disabled veterans returning from World War I to represent their unique interests. In 1932, the DAV was congressionally chartered as the official voice of the nation's wartime disabled veterans.
Saturday's game is also a Bud Night. Bud night is presented by Green Bay Hub.com and Budweiser. Bud Night is $2.00 24oz. draft Budweiser and Bud Select to anyone 21 years and older.
