YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima Shockwave are a distant memory, but fans of that team may experience a flashback when Yakima’s latest indoor football team takes the field tonight in the SunDome.
Yakima Valley’s opponent, the Wyoming Cavalry, actually predates the National Indoor Football League, which the Shockwave played in for its only season in 2001.
Wyoming’s franchise started in 2000 as the Casper Cavalry and played one season in the Indoor Football League before joining the NIFL.
In that 2001 season, the Shockwave and Cavalry played twice, with Wyoming winning the first meeting 48-8 in Casper, and the Shockwave taking the rematch 53-43 just over a month later in the SunDome.
While the Shockwave never got out of the gate for a second campaign, the Cavalry survived six more NIFL seasons, including first-round playoff losses to a team from the Tri-Cities in 2005 and ’06, before being kicked out of the league prior to the 2007 championship game.
The franchise then joined the American Indoor Football Association, helping start a western expansion that now features six West Division teams, including the expansion Yakima Valley Warriors.
Wyoming has enjoyed tremendous success in the AIFA, playing in the past two AIFA Championship Bowls (although it lost both) and currently leading the West Division with a perfect 6-0 record in a quest for a third title-game appearance.
The Cavalry roll into tonight’s SunDome meeting with the league’s top offense and an equally stingy defense.
Wyoming is averaging a league-best 65.5 points per game and 261.3 yards per game, with the top rushing offense (47.3 yards per game), and third-ranked passing attack (214.0). It’s defense ranks second, allowing 29.7 points.
