www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/06/28/conroe_courier/sports/jaguars_package_0628_web.txtIt’s safe to say the Conroe Jaguars didn’t suffer from the first game jitters in their home opener Sunday.
The Jaguars proved that with a 48-18 win over the Louisiana Conquerors in the first ever home game for the team at the Lone Star Expo Center.
The Jaguars are in their inaugural season as an indoor football team in Conroe.
“We played well,” Jaguars coach Ronald Rankins said. “We came out a little slow in the first half but we picked it up in the second half and were able to come away with the win.”
It didn’t take long for the Jaguars to wow the crowd. After kicking off, Rodney Edwards picked off a pass from Conqueror quarterback Marcus Scott.
One play later, Jaguar quarterback Andre Roy found his former Prairie View A&M teammate Joe Townsend in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard strike to quickly go up 6-0.
Roy finished the day as both the leading rusher and passer for the Jaguars going 12-of-31 for 116 yards and four touchdowns while seven times for 53 yards and two more scores.
“He did a good job overall,” Rankins said. “It’s like the rest of the team, he played slow to start out but as the game went on he began to look more comfortable and was able to make plays.”
Roy’s favorite target on the day was Joshua Lee who caught four passes for 48 yards and a first quarter touchdown that put the Jaguars up 14-0 at the time.
The defense shined for Conroe especially in the second half as the Jaguars didn’t allow any points after halftime and was highlighted by a third quarter interception return from Reginald Allen.
“Our defense came through for us in the second half,” Rankins said. “They were able to create turnovers and get some key stops that really helped our offense out.”
The Conquerors fought back in the second quarter scoring three straight touchdown, the last being a 34 yard bomb that put Louisiana up temporarily 18-14.
The Jaguars would score with five seconds left in the half on a 2-yard quarterback sneak from Roy to go ahead 20-18 before the break.
After halftime Roy would connected with another of this former Prairie View A&M teammates, Marvin Howard, for a 7-yard touchdown pass.
The interception return from Allen and touchdown runs from Roy and Calvin Harris would put the Conquerors away for good.
The game marked the second straight win for the Jaguars and the team has outscored opponents 108-18.
“We still have room for improvement,” Rankins said. “We had a good first couple of games but there’s always room to get better and we have to keep getting better each week.”

www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/07/23/conroe_courier/sports/jags_all_star_game_0724a.txtAfter a brief time off, the Conroe Jaguars will be back in action tonight with the Independent World Football Alliance All-Star Game.
The game will host the league’s top players from the five-team league tonight at the Lone Star Expo Center at 7 p.m.
“It’s real big for us,” Jaguars owner Mike Williams said. “We are excited to get to host it and are looking forward to the game.”
The game will be the first game for the players selected in nearly a month as scheduling conflicts and a forfeited game has kept the team on the sidelines.
The Jaguars will be well represented at tonight’s game. A total of 14 players will team up with the MyFlorida Kings to form one of the all-star squads.
Representing the Jaguars will be Andre Roy, Joe Townsend, Ed Moore, Jermaine Shotwell, Marjoe Tate, Joshua Lee, Marvin Howard, Kevin Petrovani, Jermaine Bluford, Demarcus Daughtry, Daniel Garcia, Glen Wallis and Reggie Allen.
The team will be coached by Conroe coaches Ronald Rankins, Greg Brown and Leon Thomasson.
“They can’t wait to play,” Williams said. “The great thing is we really get to see the talent this league has to offer. Players get to play against the best in the league and really test their talents.”
In preparation for the All-Star game, the team has used the off time to help upgrade its facilities. The team has fixed issues with the turf, added walls to the sidelines and added goalposts as well.
“We’ve been working on the field all week long,” he said. “We just put up the goal posts and added walls so it will be more like arena football. It’s going to be better than before.”
The Jaguars, who are in their inaugural season as a team, have played two games this season and won by a combined 103-18 in their first two games.
Last week’s game scheduled with the Louisiana Conquerors – who the Jaguars beat 45-18 earlier this season – was forfeited at the last minute causing the team to miss out on action for a third straight week.
After the All-Star game, the team will have three more regular season games – all at home – before possibly heading to the playoffs in late August.
In the meantime the team is enjoying the feeling of hosting the All-Star game and is looking forward to the competition and what it means to the young organization.
“It’s going to be a big deal not only for the organization but for the community as well,” Williams said. “There’s never been an indoor football all-star game in Conroe so it’s something to be excited about.”
Tonight: Independent World Football Alliance All-Star Game hosts by the Conroe Jaguars, 7 p.m., East vs. West, at the Lone Star Expo Center
Tickets: 12 and over ($12); ages 5-11 ($6); 4 and under (free)
Note: The team asks that fans help support the Montgomery County Food Bank by donating canned goods at the game.

By Keith MacPherson Updated: 07.24.10 The Conroe Jaguars didn’t need any help to help their side win the Saturday night’s All-Star game.
Literally.
After the MyFlorida Kings dropped out of the Independent World Football Alliance All-Star game, the Jaguars were forced to play a team made up of the North Texas and West Texas Crunch teams by themselves and won 26-20 in overtime.
“To win this game in overtime was huge,” Jaguar coach Ronald Rankins said. “These guys have so much talent. They wanted to win this game so bad and they pulled it out.”
Quarterback Andre Roy hit wide receiver Marvin Howard with a three-yard touchdown pass for the game-winning touchdown in the first overtime.
Roy finished the day going 12 of 23 passing for 180 yards and four touchdowns to help the team to victory.
“I really feel like we came out and competed,” Roy said. “We didn’t have everybody here today but as a team I feel like we came out and did what we had to do to win.”
Roy said he was impressed with how quickly the team came together after not playing together in nearly three weeks due to scheduling conflicts and forfeits by other league teams.
“We haven’t played in three weeks.” Roy said. “Then we had to play a lot of players in spots they don’t normally play. They may have had the better team out there tonight but we had the bigger hearts.”
Roy’s top target was former Prairie View A&M teammate Joe Townsend who caught five passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
“We started out sluggish but we were able to come together and get a win,” Townsend said. “It was a long fight. It was the first time we really had to fight all year. Whoever lines up against us it’s going to be a war.”
The team was in a bit of shock to start the game out. The team fell behind for the first time all season when the Crunch scored a first quarter touchdown to go up 6-0.
It wouldn’t take long for the Jaguars to answer though.
Roy connected with Howard for Conroe’s first touchdown of the game early in the second quarter.
A drive before that the team committed a play that would make the famous Cal/Stanford play proud. After a brief fumble, the Jaguars recovered, committed four laterals before finally finding the hands of Roy who connected on a pass that went for negative-four yards.
The Jaguars went up 12-6 later in the second quarter on a 28-yard strike from Roy to Townsend but the Crunch scored again just before halftime to tie the game 12-12.
Conroe had a holding penalty called on the first play of the second half in the end zone that was then called a safety putting the Crunch up 14-12.
Roy would again find Townsend on another 28-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to go up 20-14 but the Crunch scored with 28 seconds left in the game to tie the game at 20-20 and force overtime.
Rankins said he was proud of the way his team came out and played after missing action the last three weeks.
“This team is something special,” he said. “We are going through some growing pains and had a lot of things happen but we have a lot of talent. These guys haven’t practiced in three weeks and we came out and beat an All-Star team. It was a good feeling to see them come out and play the way they did.”
Saturday’s game: Conroe Jaguars 26, Crunch 20, overtime, Independent World Football Alliance All-Star Game, at the Lone Star Expo Center

www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/07/30/conroe_courier/sports/jags731a.txtFresh off their 26-20 overtime victory over the Crunch in the Independent World Football Alliance All-Star Game last week at the Lone Star Expo Center, the Conroe Jaguars get back into league action tonight at home against the My Florida Kings.
The Jaguars, 5-0 on the season, including two forfeits, will be facing a My Florida team that it beat 58-0 earlier this year in Florida. The Kings were supposed to have their players compete in the All-Star game with the Jaguars, but had to forfeit due to bad weather.
“They couldn’t show up because of the Hurricane (Bonnie) that was supposed to hit Louisiana,” Jaguars owner Mike Williams said. “I think it will be a really great game. We’re ready to play ball again.”
The Jaguars were supposed to be part of the All-Star game last weekend, with a group of players to represent one of the sides in the contest. However, because My Florida couldn’t show up, Conroe made up one side of the All-Star game and rallied to the victory.
“The team pulled together even though we didn’t have a full team,” Williams said.
Williams said the team is ready to go tonight.
“We’ve made some improvements to the field and we had a really good practice (Thursday) night,” he said. “The guys are looking forward to playing this game.”
The league has lost two of its teams with the folding of the Louisiana Conquerors and the West Texas Crunch, meaning Conroe and My Florida will be playing against each other in the league championship game in two weeks at a site to be determined.
“I don’t know what challenges they were going through over in Louisiana,” Williams said. “That’s really affected us and the whole league. I’m sorry he had to close out his team. He had some great talent and some of their guys want to play for us, but we’re not in position to house those guys this season. Maybe next season.”
Williams said the Jaguars have persevered this season.
“Any time you have a first-year business you have many challenges,” he said. “The Jaguar family pulled together and overcame some.”
In last week’s all-star game, QB Andre Roy, who went 12 of 23 for 180 yards and four TDs, hit Marvin Howard on a three-year TD pass for the winning overtime points.
Last Saturday’s game: Conroe Jaguars 26, Crunch 20, overtime, Independent World Football Alliance All-Star Game, at the Lone Star Expo Center
Next: My Florida Kings at Conroe Jaguars, tonight, 7 p.m., Lone Star Expo Center
Notes: The team asks fans to bring canned goods to the game tonight to donate to the Montgomery County Food Bank. Also, fans who attended last week’s All-Star Game can get in for $8 tonight with their stubs from last week. One-hundred fans will also be given free tickets to next week’s home game against the North Texas Crunch at tonight’s game.

www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/07/31/conroe_courier/sports/jags81a.txtThe Conroe Jaguars and their fans went home disappointed Saturday after the team’s expected opponent, the My Florida Kings, failed to show up for the Independent World Football Alliance game.
Last week the Jaguars and Kings were supposed to combine forces to make up one squad in last week’s All-Star Game, but My Florida called and said it couldn’t show up because of the threat of a possible hurricane during their travel. This time around, Jaguars GM Mike Williams said the Kings didn’t even call.
The forfeit gives the Jaguars a 6-0 record on the season, though three of the wins have come by forfeit. Next week’s game at the Lone Star Expo Center against the North Texas Crunch is expected to happen because the Crunch did show up last week to face the Jaguars in the All-Star Game.
“It’s just a very disappointing day for us,” Jaguars general manager Mike Williams said as Conroe players headed back to their cars, pads in hand. “It was a no-show, no-call. We really anticipated them showing up to play. We’ve been calling them just to see if they’re safe on the road and we’ve been texting them and they haven’t answered. It’s bad for the league, which has been going through many challenges in its first season. It’s not good for our fans or the community. I had people lined up at the game and had to turn them away. They were disappointed. Hopefully we can work something out for them when they show up next week.”
Williams said he spoke with the Crunch Saturday.
“They want to come down the day before the game and practice,” he said. “We’ll practice in Conroe with them.”
There have been rumors of the Jaguars possibly joining a new league and Williams said this forfeit gives him more reason to align with a new one.
“Three leagues total are interested in us being a part of their leagues,” he said. “I haven’t made a decision yet which way I want to go. I won’t make a decision until I go to ownership meetings and find out not only what they’re offering our team but our community as well.”
The Jaguars were supposed to meet the Kings in a few weeks for the league title, but with the forfeit Williams said Conroe is the champs.
“As of right now I’m declaring us the champions,” he said. “We have a better record. We stood up to all our commitments. We went to Florida and played and were going to go to Louisiana before they folded. I’m looking forward to next season. We’ll be working hard to gear toward a new league that’s more stable and one that will not only benefit us but the whole community.”
Statements by My Florida Kings, Conroe Jaguars
This statement from the Kings was e-mailed to The Courier at 6:56 p.m. Saturday:
Florida — July 26, 2010 — On or around July 25, 2010, an article was written in the Conroe Courier referencing the Independent World Football Alliance and the My Florida Kings. The My Florida Kings, Conroe Jaguars, and LA Conquerors were scheduled to play their 2010 season under the auspices of the Independent World Football Alliance. Unfortunately, the Augusta Mavericks folded after scheduling was already finalized. However, the remaining teams competently revised the schedules without conflict or scheduling difficulties. On May 29, 2010, the season opened and the My Florida Kings hosted the LA Conquerors. On Saturday, June 12, 2010, the Kings chartered a bus to Slidell Louisiana in an effort to play against the LA Conquerors. On June 19, 2010, the Kings turned around and hosted the Conroe Jaguars. On July 3, 2010, the Kings were prepared to host the LA Conquerors who failed to show. Although, it was quite costly, stressful, and back to back the Kings upheld all of their required obligations! Therefore, the Conroe Jaguars owner Mike Williams has not been left in the cold nor is he a damsel in distress. Initially the Kings and the other teams were one hundred percent supportive of each other. According to Juan Wesson of the IIFA, things deviated when Ronald Rankins, Head Coach for the Jaguars initiated contact with him and stated that Conroe only had 10 players and needed to merge in order play games. This had nothing to do with scheduling difficulties. Williams informed the Kings that he will be contacting his attorney; however, both Williams and Wesson’s (IIFA) stories are conflicting. Without the Kings knowledge Williams declared the Conroe Jaguars the Champions of the IWFA, revised our schedule and joined forces with the IIFA. Therefore, the Jaguars next game will be Saturday, August 7, 2010. The Kings have not forfeited but were literally forced out by the Conroe Jaguars.
Jaguars GM Mike Williams responds:
“That’s falsified information. I have not made a commitment to any other league in the area. We can’t force anybody out. I talked to them a few days ago and they were scheduled to come here. I upheld my agreement to go to Florida. I don’t understand where all this is coming from. The My Florida Kings and the IIFA are having controversies between the two. I don’t know why they’re pulling the Conroe Jaguars in the middle of that. I think they’re upset because the Jaguars might be coming over to the IIFA. Right now we’re all independent teams. We can play anybody we want to. I’m not distressed about anything. I’m excited about the community. I don’t know why they didn’t show up unless it’s because of the big victory (58-0) we put on them earlier this season. They should have called and said they weren’t going to be able to make it. I haven’t spoken to any lawyer. I have 30 players. We wish them luck with their team.”

That's just pure bush league. Is this the same Fla. bunch that kept no-showing against APFL teams a couple of years back?

www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/08/06/conroe_courier/sports/jagauars_package_087_www.txtThe Conroe Jaguars indoor football team will hit the turf again tonight for the “Clash of the Titans.”
The game will pit the Independent Indoor Football Alliance champions North Texas Crunch against the Independent World Football Alliance champion Jaguars at Lone Star Expo Center tonight at 7 p.m.
“We are excited to get back onto the field,” Jaguars owner Mike Williams said. “It’s going to be great to play against some really great competition. It was a breeze for us early in the season so to play a good team like this will be good.”
Conroe will see action for the first time in two weeks after last weekend’s game was canceled when the MyFlorida Kings dropped out at the last minute.
While it was disappointing to the team, Williams said the team has responded well to the situation.
“Really it wasn’t too hard to get over,” he said. “We had and idea something like that might happen. It was disappointing but we got back to work this week and had a good week of practice and now we are ready to move on.”
The Jaguars will be familiar with the Crunch as they participated in the All-Star game two weeks ago. The two teams weren’t at full strength but the Jaguars pulled out the win 26-20 in overtime.
“Neither of us had all of our players,” Williams said.
With the Jaguars’ season quickly coming to a close Williams said the future is bright for the team. The Jaguars have offers from three other leagues and Williams said the team will not be returning to the IWFA.
“We have offers from other leagues,” Williams said. “They have stepped up and showed us 14 game schedules and are serious about making this work. We would be able to provide season passes, season tickets and more to improve the fan experience.”
The Jaguars were faced with three forfeits this season due to other teams having trouble with travel or folding midseason making a transition to a new league more desirable.
While moving to another league is just beyond the horizon for the Jaguars, the team isn’t looking past tonight’s game with the Crunch.
“We are excited to get back on the field,” Williams said. “It’s going to be a good game between two very talented football teams.”

Jaguars score in final minute, then allow TD to fall 26-24www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/08/07/conroe_courier/sports/jagsaaaa.txtWillis High School graduate Danny Nephew recovered a loose football on a blocked field goal in the final minute of Saturday night’s game against the North Texas Crunch and flipped it to teammate Roland Hayes, who went the distance to give the Conroe Jaguars what appeared to be the winning touchdown.
However, the Crunch battled back with a TD pass and a two-point conversion with 37 seconds left and then held Conroe on a drive inside the 10 in the final seconds and earned a 26-24 victory at the Lone Star Expo Center.
Conroe seemed to have things under control midway through the fourth quarter, holding an 18-8 lead. However, a ball fumble out of the end zone for a safety followed by a four-play, 21-yard TD drive after the free kick by the Crunch knotted things up at 18-18 with 4:02 remaining.
With less than 90 seconds to play Oak Ridge High School graduate Mickey Williams dropped a Crunch running back for a five-yard loss and then sacked the North Texas QB for an 11-yard loss, forcing the field goal that was blocked and recovered by Nephew and pitched to Hayes for the touchdown. After the Crunch went ahead 26-24 Conroe returned the kickoff to the Crunch 21 and eventually got it to the seven before a pair of incompletions, the last one on fourth down in the end zone, allowed North Texas to escape with the victory.
Conroe suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 6-1. The Jaguars’ next game is to be announced.
Conroe got the game’s first touchdown early in the first quarter when QB André Roy hooked up with Joe Townsend on a 30-yard pass into the end zone. The Jaguars then stopped the Crunch for a second time on a goal-to-go situation.
Another highlight in the first quarter was when Conroe’s Jonathan Thomas’ 55-yard field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by Townsend, who ran for the first down.
The Crunch took an 8-6 lead at the half on a scoring pass with 20 seconds to go in the second quarter.
Conroe would score on back-to-back plays in the third quarter, set up by an interception by Travis Brown. Three plays after the pick, Roy threw to Marvin Howard after scrambling in the end zone and the receiver hauled it in, crossed the field and sprinted to the end zone for a 47-yard scoring connection. On the next play from scrimmage, the Crunch fumbled near midfield, with Demarques Daughtry picking it up and sprinting to the end zone for the 18-8 Jaguar lead.
Roy finished the game going 11 for-21 for 147 yards and two TDs, with Townsend hauling in four passes for 64 yards and a score and Howard two for 53 and a TD.
Notes: On two different plays in the game the men holding the first down markers were hit when hard tackles were made on the sideline. Both times they were flipped over the plastic barricades and into the dirt. Both were OK and finished out the game.
