Fresh, well-rested and healed, the Harrisburg Stampede look to continue their momentum on the road Saturday in AIFA Eastern Division action.
Harrisburg will take on the winless New Jersey Revolution at 7 p.m. at William G. Mennen Arena in Morristown. While the Stampede (4-1) were on a bye week, New Jersey (0-5) ended up on the short end of a 37-19 decision to the Fayetteville Guard.
The Revolution, who were an independent last year, have allowed close to 64.0 points. Offensively the team has scored only 26.0 ppg, and in this league, that’s a recipe for disaster.
“We’re going through a rough patch, and it has taken a toll on us,” New Jersey coach Al Forsythe said. “We’re young and have been hit with injuries. We have to also learn how to play four quarters. I feel that we need that one spark to turn it around in a game and get a win.”
The Revolution are averaging six turnovers a game, and quarterbacks Mike Merritt and Bill Winters have combined for only nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
“A lot of things are going on with the team,” New Jersey GM and owner Rob Tester said. “It’s a process ... it doesn’t happen overnight so we’re looking at it long term. I know that we’re headed in the right direction.”
Harrisburg is certainly on that positive road right now as the offense (50.2 ppg) is scoring points, while the defense (34.2 ppg) is getting after teams. In their last game two weeks ago against Fayetteville, running back Eugene Goodman tallied five touchdowns en route to a 49-21 rout.
“We’re going out trying to dominate teams and continue towards our goal,” Stampede coach Ramon Robinson said. “We can be one of the top teams in the league.”
Following Saturday’s game, Harrisburg will travel to Baltimore to take on the high-flying Mariners (6-0). The team will then play Erie Storm (May 8) at home at the Farm Show Arena before going on its final bye of the season.
“We want to go on a run before the bye week,” Robinson said. “Our first game against Baltimore was tight before a turnover in the final minute gave them the win.”
Harrisburg will have healthy players, like defensive back Archie Smith (hamstring) and receiver Silas Daniels (elbow), on hand for the game Saturday.
“Our goal is to tackle what is in front of us ... and that is those three games before the bye,” Robinson said.
