Last week's much-needed win over Maryland allowed the Bloomington Extreme to rid the bitter taste from a discouraging loss to Chicago.
But Kenton Carr doesn't want his players thinking all their ills have been cured as they meet the Rochester Raiders Friday in a battle of Indoor Football League squads with identical 3-3 records.
"We're a talented team, but we're not that talented where you can become complacent," Carr said ahead of the 6:35 p.m. game at the Dome Arena in Henrietta, N.Y. "It's easy to do, to think we won a game and we can go back to our old ways.
"You can't do that. You've got to approach it like you're competing for your job every week."
After collecting five interceptions a week ago, the Bloomington defense is eager to rack up more takeaways.
"It's even more important this game because we're banged up," said defensive back Vincent Joseph. "We've got to pay attention to detail, take the ball away and get off the field quick."
While the defense has carried the load for most of the season, the Extreme offense has shown signs of improvement.
"We just have to learn how to use all the tools to get the most out of it," said receiver John Cooper, who has eight catches in two games since joining the team on March 23. "The difference from my first week here to week two has been great and I think you're going to see a similar progression as the season continues."
Rochester is coming off a 40-33 loss to Richmond in which Omar Baker filled in at quarterback for injured starter Perry Patterson. Patterson, who has thrown 16 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, is expected to return tonight.
The versatile Baker has rushed for three TDs, caught two and thrown two, while Kevin Conception (nine TD catches) and Chris Carter (224 yards receiving) are the primary targets in the passing game.
"They've been in some tight games and I have a feeling it'll be down to the wire again," said Carr. "Our defense is playing so well lately that I think we can do a good job against these guys. They don't do anything particularly fancy; we've just got to slow their quarterbacks down."
Bloomington, Amarillo swap defenders: The Extreme traded linebacker Shonda Faulkner to the Amarillo Venom on Wednesday in exchange for former Southern Illinois defensive lineman Jerome Roberts.
Roberts, who will not play in Friday night's game, had one sack and three solo tackles in two games for Amarillo.
