WHAT: An IFL game between the La Crosse Spartans (0-5) and the Sioux City Bandits (2-3)
WHEN: 3 p.m. today
WHERE: The La Crosse Center
RADIO: KQYB-FM 98.3
LAST WEEK: The Spartans lost to the Green Bay Blizzard 43-30. Sioux City lost to the Sioux Falls Storm 57-23.
BANDITS UPDATE: Sioux City has lost three of its last four games since its season-opening, 48-38 victory over Colorado. Running back John Bentley, one of the team's top offensive threats, was released last week. Bentley had 21 receptions for 184 yards and 4 TDs, and he also rushed for 98 yards and 4 TDs. Quarterback James McNear has completed 77 of 133 passes for 853 yards, 19 TDs and 4 INTs. Linebacker Spetlar Tonga is Sioux City's top defensive player with 32 tackles.
SPARTANS UPDATE: La Crosse co-owner/general manager Chris Kokalis took a bold move Wednesday by guaranteeing the Spartans would win today. However, they've played better the last two weeks, losing to the Omaha Beef and the Green Bay Blizzard by 12 and 13 points, respectively. The Spartans must find a way to get off to a fast start, as they've been outscored 27-3 in the first quarter of their last two games. Quarterback Jimmy Sangster, who was injured in La Crosse's season-opening loss to Wichita, is expected to see some playing time today. The Spartans' defense must try to make up for the loss of LB Blake Freese. Freese, who had 44 tackles, has left the team to pursue an opportunity in the CFL.
