The La Crosse Spartans attempted to put a positive spin on their 0-5 start on Wednesday, announcing at a press conference that the team is guaranteeing a win Sunday.
The Spartans host the Sioux City Bandits at 3 p.m. at the
La Crosse Center.
"We're the first team in the history of professional sports to guarantee a win without having won a game yet," general manager Chris Kokalis said. "We're very confident that our team has gotten better the last few games and we're very confident in our players."
If the Spartans don't win, the team will offer free tickets
to its May 21 home game against the Bloomington Extreme,
plus giveaway items from sponsors.
Kokalis also announced two roster updates.
Linebacker Blake Freese, the team's top tackler, has left the team after being invited to tryouts with Canadian Football League teams.
Freese, a former Minnesota State, Mankato player, is seventh in the IFL with 44 tackles. He also has an interception return for a touchdown this season.
"That's what this is all about is to get guys to the next level," Kokalis said.
Quarterback Jimmy Sangster, expected to be one of the team's top players this season, will be in uniform Sunday and could see playing time. Sangster opened the season as the Spartans' quarterback but suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and has missed the last four games.
Kewan Dewberry (248 yards, two touchdowns, four interceptions) has been the primary quarterback since then.
"It's been a work in progress," Sangster said of his injury.
"But I'm super-excited to get back to work and get on the field. It's ultimately going to be coach (Gilbert) Brown's decision."
