www.albanyherald.com/sports/headlines/90811704.htmlALBANY — The Panthers’ rivalry with Columbus in the Southern Indoor Football League took a hit on Tuesday when the league ruled to change the Panthers’ May 8 game against Columbus.
Houston was originally scheduled to play the Panthers at the Albany Civic Center on May 8, but Houston dropped out of the league days before the season opener because of problems with the lease at Reliant Stadium.
The Panthers replaced Houston with Columbus, which would have given Albany two home games against the Lions and two games in Columbus, and most of the Panthers were happy because those games would increase what they hope will be a rivalry with Columbus.
But Lafayette will play in Albany on May 8, because adding Columbus would have given Columbus 12 games and left LaFayette with only a 10-game schedule. All teams play 11 games.
“We would have liked to have played Columbus because of the rivarly,’’ Panthers general manager Will Carter said. “But we had a conference call (Tuesday) and we need to replace that game with Lafayette because of the numbers, the number of games each team plays.’’
