Harrisburg Stampede coach Ramon Robinson has been perplexed about something since the season began last month.
Firmly seated in second place in the AIFA Eastern Division, the organization is still hungry for fan support that’s afforded the other teams in Harrisburg.
“We have a point to prove to this town,” Robinson said. “We have a good professional football team, and we would like for our fans to come out and support us like they do with the Bears and Senators. I’ve been disappointed in the crowds thus far, but we still have to go out and perform.”
The Stampede (3-1) hope to continue their momentum when they play host to the Fayetteville Guard (1-2) at 7:30 p.m. today at the Farm Show Arena.
Last week, co-owner John Morris talked about the need for more fan support in the light of a three-game winning streak, that included a big victory on the road against the defending champion Reading Express three weeks ago.
Anyway, the show must continue and Harrisburg appears to be getting better each week. Last week in a 55-19 rout of the Erie Storm, the Stampede erupted in the second half to outscore Erie 38-3 to pull away from a close game.
A ball-hawking, opportunistic defense, led by linebacker William Hines and defensive back Marcus Sargeant, has scored a combined 28 points in two games. Overall, the defense has registered 10 interceptions, three fumble recoveries and five touchdowns.
“Since I like baseball, I’ll used the terminology that we rallied in the second half because of our defense last week,” Robinson said. “I’m very impressed with the way the defense has come together.”
It’s also obvious that it’s way ahead of the offense.
“We have a lot of weapons ... and should be playing better," Robinson said. "We need more consistency on offense, and we need to support the defense.”
Harrisburg quarterback Kelvin Robinson (691 yards, 13 touchdowns, five interceptions) is getting into a groove and looks comfortable with each passing game. The weapons Robinson talked about include receivers Keith Stokes, Silas Daniels and Kevin Marion and running back Eugene Goodman.
The team is averaging 50.5 points on offense and is allowing 37.5 ppg. Fayetteville, on the other hand, is struggling scoring points (38.0 ppg).
Last week, the Guard dropped a 55-39 decision to the expansion Richmond Raiders. The team is in the middle of a three-game road trip. Quarterback N. Gildersleeve (575 yards, 14 TDs, seven INTs) and receivers Ty Pettergru and Prentic Quince, with three scoring receptions each, pace the Guard.
“Once we come together as a team, it will be a beautiful thing to watch,” Robinson said.
