WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Venom’s bye week has arrived earlier than expected.
The Venom will get two bye weeks in a row, as their Saturday trip to Utah to take on the Ogden Knights has been canceled.
The American Indoor Football Association announced in a press release Wednesday that the Knights will finish the 2010 season as a traveling team in the Western Conference “due to unforeseen circumstances.”
“Due to an undisclosed and confidential matter between the Golden Spike Arena in Ogden, Utah, and (Knights CEO William) Bennett, the Knights’ remaining five home dates are no longer available,” the press release said.
“Sometimes situations arise outside the control of the league,” AIFA co-founder John Morris said in the press release. “However, our job and our commitment to our member teams are to make the best decisions for all parties involved. ... We guarantee no disruption to any other member teams’ home games.”
In a phone interview Wednesday, Bennett said the Knights will still play their May 22 game against the Venom at Town Toyota Center.
“We’re still in existence. We’re just going down a different avenue,” he said.
Wenatchee Valley will have to wait until its April 24 home tilt with the Wyoming Cavalry to try to bounce back from last week’s 64-48 loss to the Yakima Valley Warriors.
“We’re disappointed we’re not playing this week,” Venom coach Keith Evans said. “We’ve had a great week of practice. We’re really paying attention to detail. We want to make sure we don’t have a mental breakdown like we had Saturday. We just need to turn our game up.
“We’re just going to make due and get ready for that big one on the 24th — and we will be ready,” he added.
Evans maintained the league is in good standing.
“The league is strong, regardless of this one isolated incident,” he said.
