WENATCHEE — In practice this week, the Wenatchee Valley Venom haven’t been concerning themselves too much with the Yakima Valley Warriors, their opponent come Saturday. Instead, they’re just concentrating on getting back over .500.
“I’m anxious to get another win under our belt,” said Venom coach Keith Evans, whose team lost to the Wyoming Cavalry 48-46 in overtime last week. “We just want to come out and play Venom football. If we play at our top level, we’re looking at a big win.”
Wenatchee Valley dominated the Warriors in the season opener at Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee, but, if things go according to plan, the score may turn out to be even more lopsided in the Yakima Valley SunDome than the 54-25 tally from two weeks back. The addition of running back Travis Rhone, who signed with the Venom before the Wyoming game last week, has given the team just another in a long list of offensive weapons.
“It gives us something else for the defense to think about,” Evans said.
Evans is impressed with Rhone, a Wayne State product who ran for 47 yards and a touchdown against the Cavalry.
“He’s a natural,” Evans said. “He’s an NFL(-caliber) running back, and he’s only 23. That kid will be playing for some real money. It’s a blessing to have him.”
The Venom expect Wenatchee native Matt Martinez to make his long-awaited debut for the team against the Warriors. The offensive lineman out of the University of Idaho has missed the first two games of the season with an ankle injury.
“It’ll be huge for us,” Evans said of getting Martinez on the field. “He’s definitely one of the better offensive linemen in the league if he’s healthy.”
