Just 13 days after holding down one of the Indoor Football League's most prolific passers, the Bloomington Extreme will be looking for a repeat performance.
Only this time Kenton Carr's team has to do it on Blizzard quarterback Jake Phillips' home turf.
"It's huge," the third-year coach said of Friday's 7:05 p.m. meeting between the 2-1 Extreme and its Central North Division co-leader at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. "If we win, it's like we're up two, but if we lose, Green Bay's ahead. It's a must win."
Phillips leads the IFL with 621 yards passing and his 13 touchdown passes rank second by one. But none of Phillips' scoring strikes came in the Extreme's 24-20 victory two weeks ago at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
"We did beat them, but they think we got lucky," said Carr. "They don't change anything; they're going to throw deep on us all day because that's what they want to do."
Bloomington's defense will have to contend with another offensive threat in running back Randy Bell, who played for Blizzard coach Rik Richards during his stints with RiverCity (St. Charles, Mo.) and Rock River (Rockford).
Bell, who signed with Green Bay this week, racked up a team-leading 283 rushing yards with seven TDs in 10 IFL games with the Rage last season. He also caught 18 passes for 183 yards and six scores and totaled 544 kick return yards that included one touchdown.
"I had a feeling he'd be joining him again and sure enough he's here ready to play us," said Carr. "He's a really good running back and a pretty good kick returner, too. We'll have to contain him."
A short week following Sunday's 27-26 win at Chicago cut short Bloomington's preparation time.
"We had a good practice Tuesday. I liked the tempo and intensity and I thought we were focused," said Carr. "The short week is just the way it is, we've just got to get through it.
"If we win, we're in the driver's seat and have a bit of wiggle room. But we've got to win."
