“It was huge,” Venom coach Keith Evans said of the victory. “This is history. You can’t rewrite history. This was the first pro football game in the valley, and we delivered. We couldn’t let these 3,600 people down.”
The players knew what was riding on Saturday’s game.
“It was very important to let the community know that they have a team to represent them,” said wide receiver and franchise player Phil Goodman. “Now they know they’re going to get their money’s worth every week.”
Some team members were even taken aback after realizing the weight of their accomplishments.
“It’s unbelievable. It didn’t really hit us until Coach (Evans) said ‘This is history in the making,’ ” linebacker Isaiah Wily said.
In addition to starting the team’s history on a positive note, the Venom also was concerned with sending a message to the rest of the AIFA.
“It’s good for the league to know that we are prepared,” said quarterback Devin Hollins.
“(Winning) was the biggest thing we could have done,” safety Ruschard Dodd-Masters said. “To get the wheels on the car rolling, that’s always big.”
