www.albanyherald.com/sports/headlines/86112817.htmlALBANY — The Albany Panthers announced the signings of their next wave of players for the team's inaugural season Tuesday, including former NFL signee with the St. Louis Rams, Alton Pettway (6-foot-1 275 pounds) from Albany State University. Pettway, a defensive lineman, won consecutive SIAC Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2005 and 2006 and helped lead ASU to four consecutive conference titles. While at ASU, Pettway led the SIAC in sacks (14.5) and tackles for a loss (21.5) and finished the 2006 season with 53 tackles. Pettway was also a finalist for the Harlon Hill award, which is equivalent to the Heisman Trophy in Division II.
Another signee brought on board Tuesday was receiver Marlon White (6-4, 210) from Vanderbilt. In his final season with the Commodores, White registered a career-high 34 receptions and six touchdowns. He posted 350 receiving yards, topping the 1,000-yard career receiving mark. In the season opener, White set single-game highs with seven receptions, 80 yards and TD at Wake Forest. He has one year experience in af2 playing for the Mahoning Valley Thunder.
The final signees announced Tuesday were: Devon Lewis (6-5, 293) from the University of Maryland; rookie fullback Kevin Holmes (6-3, 275) from Albany State University and rookie offensive/defensive lineman LaJavier Baker (6-0, 335) from Dodge City Community College.
The Panthers will hold their final open team tryout Saturday at Albany State University's football practice field. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the tryout will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
