Defensive lineman Antonio Ficklin, who led the Extreme with nine sacks and 18½ tackles for loss last season, suffered a torn patella tendon during training camp this week and will miss the IFL season.
“Obviously it’s a big loss,” Extreme coach Kenton Carr said after Thursday’s practice at Game Time Gym II. “He’s a good kid and he’ll bounce back.”
Aside from losing the fan favorite Ficklin, Carr has been pleased with what he’s seen in camp, particularly the quarterback battle between former Illinois State starter Luke Drone, Eric McCollom and Will Ducey.
“All three of them can play in this league and all three can be very successful,” said Carr.
Carr said he’s been impressed by all nine receivers in camp but singled out Adam Kesler, saying the Eastern Illinois product “doesn’t do anything wrong.”
Carr noted the defense is slightly ahead of the offense and that the offensive line keeps improving daily. He’s eager to see how the team fares against opposition when the Cincinnati Cyclones of the CIFL visit for a scrimmage at 11 a.m. Saturday.
“It’ll be good to kind of gauge where we stand,” said Carr.
