The details were sketchy to Jimmy Sanger. The La Crosse Spartans' quarterback had to think for a moment Sunday about the last time he'd been in this situation. But truth be told, he had forgotten a lot over time.
In time, the Spartans' 14-11 Indoor Football League exhibition loss to the Green Bay Blizzard likely will be purged from Sanger's memory banks as well. He knew La Crosse's official return to indoor football after nearly seven years comes Friday night on the road in the regular-season opener against the Wichita Wild.
Sanger wanted to send a La Crosse Center crowd announced at 2,932 happy, and he was disappointed as he watched Green Bay win the game on a 34-yard field goal by Cleveland McCoy as time expired.
But he knew the memory of what happened would fade over time. Kind of like last year when his old team, the River City Rage, played an exhibition game against a St. Louis-area outdoor team.
"I know we hung 70 (points) on them," Sanger said. "But I didn't play in that game."
Sanger, who signed with the Spartans in January, likely will be around for their regular-season home opener on April 3 against the Omaha Beef. As far as the rest of the team is concerned, La Crosse coach Gilbert Brown has some tough choices to make in cutting the roster from 38 to 25 today.
The Spartans' defense allowed just one touchdown and 101 yards of offense. They had five "sacks" (quarterbacks wore red jerseys and weren't allowed to be tackled).
"Overall I thought the defense did a good job," Spartans defensive lineman Dempsey Miller said. "We were really flying to the ball."
Brown hopes the Spartans' offense will play with the same energy come Friday.
La Crosse had just 42 yards total offense on 43 plays. The Spartans' longest play from scrimmage was nine yards. Sanger, a backup last year with River City, was 6-for-14 for 42 yards and an interception.
"I look at more than what the defense did. I'm not happy with how the offense played," Brown said. "We have a lot of work to do. There are a lot of things we have to get better at."
That will be Sanger's mindset this week.
"We all know what this (exhibition game) is," Sanger said. "We just needed to get the jitters out and try to get everyone initiated."
