While dejected Bears fans might argue that football is dead in Chicago, there apparently is a rebirth under way that could rival the early days of the NFL under George "Papa Bear" Halas.
Another new football team, the Chicago Cardinals, is preparing to open its indoor season next month and play its games in Villa Park.
The Cardinals will play in the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL), which lost the Chicago Slaughter when the unbeaten Hoffman Estates-based club defected to the Indoor Football League (IFL).
The Slaughter opens its new season on Feb. 27 at the Sears Centre against the Rochester Raiders.
And just five weeks later the Chicago Rush of the new Arena Football One league (AF1) will kick off its season on the road April 3 before hosting its home opener at April 11 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont.
And while all that is going on, the Bears coaching staff will be busy preparing for next week's NFL Scouting Combine and the April NFL Draft.
Four football teams in one market, not to mention two women's teams (Chicago Force of the Independent Women's Football League, and the Chicago Bliss of the Lingerie Football League).
Getting back to the newest entry, the Cardinals of the six-team CIFL will play indoor football at the Odeum with its first home game April 10 against the Columbus Aces. For more information on the league, visit ciflfootball.com or chicagocardinalsfootball.com.
The four-year-old Slaughter organization will begin its first season in the 25-team IFL, which features six divisions. Teams from Bloomington (IL), Green Bay and La Crosse (WI) will compete for the division against the Slaughter and head coach Steve McMichael. For more information on the league, visit goifl.com or chicago-slaughter.com.
While the old Arena Football League disbanded, several of its clubs joined the Chicago Rush and head coach Mike Hohensee in a new league. For more on the Rush, visit arenafootballone.com or arenarush.com.
