YAKIMA, Wash. — During last Saturday’s tryout camp, Yakima Valley Warriors owner Michael Mink said he was pleased with the quality of players who showed up.
That became evident when the indoor football team turned around and signed 10 of the 45 players to contracts for training camp, with other signings possible.
“We had a pretty good group,” Mink said this week. “We still have some guys we need to get physicals on before we sign them.”
Among the tryout signings were former Yakima Valley players Jason Bolin and Mike Sexton.
Bolin, a lineman, played at Highland High School and later at Linfield College. Sexton, a quarterback, attended East Valley High.
“It’ll be a community team,” Mink said.
Among the other signings, the biggest — both literally and figuratively — was lineman Wilson Afoa. The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder was a three-year starting defensive tackle at the University of Washington.
Other signings included lineman Timothy Freeburg, a walk-on at Washington State University, kicker Matthew Evenson from the University of Oregon, and running back Vann Vetch, who attended Boise State University.
The Warriors also signed two players who were not at the tryout — receiver Gabe Hatchett, and fullback-linebacker Marcus Mitchell, both of whom have indoor football experience.
