WASILLA — While former Alaska Wild coach Hans Deemer helped the Anchorage indoor franchise prepare for its first open tryout in 2007, he wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
Now, Deemer is having similar feelings once again.
Deemer, who is working to bring indoor football to the Mat-Su Valley, is hosting the first open tryout for the Arctic Predators football organization on Saturday at noon at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla. “I don’t think anybody knew what to expect,” Deemer said, referring to that first open tryout hosted by the Wild. “It turend out to be a great deal. I don’t think we expected more than 75, and the next thing we knew, there was 300 people.”
Deemer is not sure if he’ll see 300 athletes funnel onto the Menard’s turf field. But he’s confident that a solid number of players will show up to compete for the opportunity to wear the purple and black of the Arctic Predators.
“We’ve got quite a few inquires,” Deemer said. “I think we’re going to break $50.”
The cost to try out is $50.
The Arctic Predators is also hosting its cheerleader tryouts Sunday at 1 p.m. at the MVD Dance Studio in Palmer.
Those with questions about either event can contact the team through the squad’s website at www.matsufootball.com.
The Predators are slated to call Wasilla home and compete in the American Indoor Football Association, starting in March of this year.
Deemer said the Predators’ 2010 schedule will be released early next month.
