WENATCHEE — At long last, the Wenatchee Valley Venom are ready for some football.
After several delays, the expansion indoor football franchise has announced its first-ever regular season schedule.
The Venom, who will be one of six teams in the American Indoor Football League’s West Division, will square off with the Yakima Valley Warriors at the Town Toyota Center on March 20 at 7:05 p.m.
“We are pleased to have our schedule finalized,” said Mark Helm, the Venom’s general manager.
The Venom will play 14 games total, and all will be against the five West Division teams (Yakima Valley, Wyoming, Ogden, San Jose and Wasilla).
Games will be played on Saturday nights.
After the regular season, which runs through July 3, the top two teams in each division will play for the right to play in AIFA Bowl IV, which will be hosted by the East winner this season.
After the franchise’s inaugural game against Yakima Valley, Venom fans will have to wait more than a month before the team returns to Wenatchee.
Wenatchee Valley will play three road games and have the first of two bye weeks before the defending West champion Wyoming Cavalry ride into town on April 24.
The Venom will embark on another three-game road trip before beginning a four-game homestand against the Ogden (Utah) Knights on May 22.
“We’re actually kind of excited about it,” Helm said of the lack of home games early on. “We’ll have four weeks to get the kinks worked out of the game production after that first one, and we’ll see how we can improve it. By the time the spring comes around, we’ll be clicking.”
Helm added that the slight overlap of his team’s schedule with that of the Wenatchee Wild, the other tenant of the Town Toyota Center, played a role in the scheduling of early-season home games.
“Things were tight because of that,” he said. “The Town Toyota Center did a good job of making some Saturday dates early on available to us.”
Helm is hoping that a rivalry develops between the Wenatchee Valley and Yakima Valley, the only two Washington teams in the league. The Venom play at Yakima on April 3 in the third game of the season.
“They’ll be games that fans on either side can easily travel to watch,” he said.
