La Crosse Spartans general manager Chris Kokalis had no complaints when he saw the final result.
As far as Kokalis is concerned, both the Indoor Football League and La Crosse Center director Art Fahey treated the expansion Spartans well when it came to the 2010 schedule.
Of course Kokalis would have liked the Spartans' first home game to come sooner than April 3 when they host the West Michigan Thunderhawks. But he was happy to know when La Crosse would play its first game - Feb. 27 at the Wichita Wild. And it can't come soon enough for him.
"Art was very up front with us," Kokalis said Monday night. "We knew (scheduling home games in) March would be a challenge because of trade shows and other events at the Center, so this is a very fair schedule for us."
It's a schedule in which La Crosse has back-to-back bye weeks after its opener and won't play again until March 22. It's also a schedule in which the Spartans will play five consecutive home games from April 3 through April 30 before going on the road for five of their last seven games.
"You can look at a situation like that both ways," Kokalis said. "It could be a difficult situation, but having five home games in the bulk of our schedule could help give us an advantage."
SEASON TICKETS UPDATE: Kokalis said the Spartans are less than halfway toward reaching their goal of selling between 1,600 and 1,700 season tickets. But Kokalis is optimistic sales will increase.
"That's the nice thing about not having our first home game until April," Kokalis said. "It gives us more time to reach our goal."
TRYOUT CAMP: The Spartans will hold their final tryout camp Jan. 8 and 9 at UW-La Crosse's Mitchell Hall. Kokalis said the Spartans, who are coached by former Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Gilbert Brown, have signed 32 players to date.
CHRISTMAS PARTY: The Spartans will host the "Christmas to Remember: The Gilbert Brown/La Crosse Spartans Toy Drive and Community Christmas Party." The event starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Dock 7 Banquet Hall (formerly the La Crosse Footwear Building). The event is open to the public.
